Testing for PKD

Question: I have 2 kids and their father has PKD. Is there any kind of testing that can be done to see if they have it?

Testing for PKDAnswer: To diagnose a disease, family history, symptoms and testing are often used together. Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is an inherited kidney disorder, so when father has PKD, there is possibility for children to have it, but it is not absolute. It causes fluid-filled cysts to form in the kidneys. Many people live with PKD for years without experiencing symptoms associated with the disease. Now how old are your kids? Maybe they are too young to detect the cysts on kidneys. But generally, patients with PKD will have high blood pressure in 30s, high serum creatinine in 40s and kidney failure in 50s.

As to the testing, PKD requires imaging tests to look for cysts of the kidney, liver, and other organs.

-Abdominal ultrasound. This test is commonly used in PKD diagnosis. It is to use sound waves to look at kidneys for cysts. This is noninvasive.

-Abdominal MRI scan. It is to use strong magnets to image body to visualize kidney structure and look for cysts.

-Abdominal CT scan. This test can detect smaller cysts in the kidneys.

-Intravenous pyelogram. It is to use a dye to make blood vessels show up more clearly on an X-ray.

It is good not to detect PKD. But if it is unfortunate, do not lose hope. PKD is incurable. But timely treatment can help patients live a normal life without developing kidney failure.

Treatment for PKD

Besides symptomatic treatment, it is advised to take treatment to shrink renal cysts. Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy can infiltrate the micronized herbs into kidneys to take effect. It can dilate blood vessels on cyst wall and speed up blood microcirculation so that fluid can be taken away. It can also suppress the secretion of lining cells of cyst so as to stop their growth. These two functions can help reduce inner pressure of cyst and reduce cyst fluid so as to achieve the goal of shrinking renal cysts.

Now you are clear about the testing and treatment for PKD. Note: the material is just for informational purposes. For specific treatment recommendations, please consult a physician.
